Creative lessons in artwork

Essex County Standard, February 18, 2005

Children from Myland Primary have spent time over the past four weeks, taking part in art workshops in the Benham Gallery at Cuckoo Farm Studios. The sessions are part of a community initiative and follow Myland Parish Council's decision to commission a new public artwork to be situated on the junction of the new Northern Approach Road and Mill Road. The theme of this artwork refers to the local architecture and will act as a beacon to further public artworks in the parish. The funds for this project have been raised by CONEC, the community association Community Outreach in North and East Colchester. Part of the funding has included the provision of art workshops for the children from Myland Primary School on Mill Road. These have been led by the resident artists from Cuckoo Farm, which is also in Myland parish. Sculptor Natasha Carsberg, assisted by class 4 teacher Ellen Sizer-James, helped the children to be architects and interior designers for the day as they designed their ideal room and collaborated together to build a community 'house'. The artists hope the workshops will be the start of an on-going arrangement where local schoolchildren of all ages can benefit from the vast array of artistic skills and talents available on their doorstep at Cuckoo Farm Studios.
