Ref: PR601 Castleford area pupils are being inspired by a new pilot arts project designed to boost learning. Wakefield Council’s Arts Development officers have been working with children at Oyster Park Junior School at Ferry Fryston to explore how creativity can enhance achievements in geography. The school had been inspired by improvements at nearby park, The Green. It is one of the schemes being developed as part of the Castleford Project, a regeneration initiative being filmed for a major Channel 4 series. There, local children worked with landscape designers Parklife, and Arts Council funded artist Chris Campbell to contribute to design ideas. At Oyster Park a series of sessions were held to help Year 4 pupils explore their play area and develop ideas for improving a possible further four spaces. Sculptor and garden designer Natasha Carsberg worked with pupils to develop creative ideas, which she will use to influence her own design. Another sculptor David Mayne will soon be working with pupils to help them develop sculpting skills and to encourage ideas for improving the school entrance in a way which celebrates the heritage of pupils, their school and Castleford. Wakefield Council’s Cabinet member for Children and Young People, Wayne Jenkins said: " The children have really enjoyed getting directly involved in developing ideas and it is really important they feel they can contribute creatively to improvements in the community. We look forward to being able to review what has been learned from this exciting initiative." If the pilot scheme is successful, the results will be further developed into a toolkit for use by other Wakefield schools. For further information please contact Wendy North on 01226 392330.
