Art in the Landscape - North Walsham High School

We collected materials from round the school, a few of us found some old guttering and made a frame out of it - we thought that it would be good to hang other peoples work from.

We made it a triangular shape because the ground where we sited it was divided into triangles.

We attached the laminated sheets using cable ties and rivets, and used them to fill the spaces in the frame. It looked like a tent with semi-transparent sides.

Other people hung small sculptures on wire from the top of the frame - these moved in the breeze.

Some of us worked on the railings outside the Art & Tech departments. The railings were in a part of the school that was unattractive and always covered in litter:

'It was like a fence, and dark red and a horrible colour, so we decided that string would make all the twirls along it. I just put that along there then the rest was supposed to be down there. We thought lets just do it all over'

A lot of people in the school used the walkway beside the railings, so they all saw us working and wanted to know what the art was about.

'Some people are walking past saying the one at the end is good. There's another one over there which I like, then there was the tree, that one looks good.'

Working on the railings also gave us the opportunity to make art for a large outside space - which we hadn't done before.

Our Art (Reclaim)

'We had a talk about this project.  Went litter picking to get material such as bottles, crisp packets, and we made patterns out of them.  We laminated them into waterproof pouches.  We did it to show the way of school life - such as Monday mornings, break time, lunch time, and home time. We laminated it to make it smoother and give it an effect, and to crinkle it we ironed it.'

'That's meant to be our sun and this is our sky.  This is the tree behind us and the roof of the hall.'

'We found that wire like that, in a twirl shape.  It just fitted on there and looked really good.'

'It looks good with just that.'
