2004 Artist in Residence.  

St. Giles C of E Primary School, Gt. Maplestead, Essex.

My objectives during the residency, were to:

  1. Produce a design for the garden area situated in front of the school buildings.  

  2. Create one central sculpture,  three sculptural seats and one archway; as indicated on the garden design.

  3. To produce the designs for these works in partnership with the pupils, teachers and parents of the school.  (See below)

  4. To allow the pupils, teachers and parents, where possible, to participate in the construction and installation of the sculptures.

Central Sculpture

                    

Steel, wood & glass sculpture based on pupils designs produced in the workshop, and relating to the soft landscaping in the garden. Dimensions 1 x 0.5 x 0.5 m. Materials – painted steel and acid treated steel with anti graffiti finish.

               

  • Pupil Involvement:

  • Sculpture workshop 4th May 2004. 30 pupils in two sessions of approx. 2 hours.

  • Materials – sheet steel, found metal objects (to be brought in by pupils), hot glue, acrylic paint.

  

Group of Three Sculptural Seats

    

   

Steel sculptural seats based on ‘Maple’ design.  Dimensions 1.5 x 0.4 x 0.4 m.  Materials - Steel with anti graffiti finish.  

  • Pupil Involvement:

  • Workshop 5th May 2004.  6 pupils to create sculptural seat on site.  Pre-cut sections to be bolted together, finished and painted.

  • Materials – pre-cut steel and wood, anti graffiti paint, bolts and spanners, gloves and mask.

  

Archway

          

Steel frame with pierced sheet copper panels.  Dimensions: 2 x 0.3 x 0.3 m.

  • Pupil Involvement:

  • Workshop 30th April. Introduction to the garden, sculpture and how I work.  Large scale drawings relating to the garden & how it will be used.  Drawings then transferred to copper panels and co-ordinated into one design.

  • Materials: A1 paper, pencils, paints etc, glue, scissors.
